Coherent structures in turbulence

Abstract:
Hydrodynamic turbulence is a highly non-equilibrium system characterized by strong fluctuations of velocity. The fluctuations are chaotic and should be characterized by their correlation functions. Besides, at some conditions turbulent state contains coherent structures that are in dynamic equilibrium with chaotic motion. Such structures appear in two-dimensional or quasi-two-dimensional cases due to the inverse energy cascade. We analyze structure of coherent vortices that are stable structures in a finite two-dimensional box where turbulence is excited at scales smaller than the box size.
